The Ocean Observatory was a cross-gallery initiative at the Exploratorium that created public experiences exploring the marine environment, and the human relationship to the marine context.  Curated by Jennifer Frazier and Susan Schwartzenberg, this collection of exhibits and programs through the Exploratorium’s waterfront Living Systems and Environment galleries focused on data, specimens, and stories of the San Francisco Bay.  Over fifteen exhibits were created across the two galleries, ranging from data visualizations of current bay data to whimsical watercolors and microscopic dioramas.  Exhibits such as Seasons of Plankton and Wired Pier used scientific data from buoy, environmental sampling, and microscopy to enable exploration of the ever changing conditions of San Francisco Bay and their relationship to long term climatic impacts.  Glass Settling Plates, created by Denise King, uses specially engineering vessels from the bay, microscopes, and watercolors by artist Gailey Ezer to let visitors explore the unappreciated “fouling community” growing on piers and boat bottoms.  Public events on sea level rise, ocean data collection, marsh restoration, and fish migration were a few of the many programs offered from 2013 - 2019.  This work was funded by two awards to Jennifer Frazier from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
